From Trailer to Hotel: Another Travel Win with Max

Just when we thought we had this whole "traveling with Max" thing figured out in our trailer, a new challenge popped up.
We began our RV adventures so we could watch one of our sons play summer baseball in Bend. Now, we wanted to continue cheering him on as he started his college career at the University of Oregon. The catch? Finding an RV spot in Eugene that was both available and conveniently located near the stadium turned out to be impossible. Most places were simply too far for us to go back and forth during a three-day weekend series.
So—what now?
Once again, we found ourselves needing to adapt. Could Max handle staying in a hotel instead of our trusty trailer?
We started researching places that offered bedroom-style suites so Max could have a separate sleeping area. While we couldn’t bring his full trailer setup—no Christmas lights or usual layout—we hoped to create a familiar environment as best we could. Honestly, I had serious doubts. The hotel just felt too different from the safe, predictable space Max was used to.
A New Milestone in Eugene
When the day arrived, we checked into the Residence Inn in Eugene. Max was wide-eyed as we made our way through the lobby, up the elevator, and down the hallway to our room.
But to our surprise—he adjusted almost immediately.
We showed him which bed was his, and he climbed right in. We had brought his favorite blanket, pillow, and sound machine from home, and somehow, that was enough. In Max’s mind, this new space quickly became his "home away from home."
He fell asleep easily that night, and we were thrilled—we had crossed another major hurdle in our travel journey.
A Quick Tip for Fellow Parents
Hotels like the Residence Inn can be a great option for families with special needs. The suite layout provides space and separation, which can be comforting. And the small kitchen and fridge are perfect if your child has specific dietary needs. You can bring their favorite meals and snacks, just like you would at home or in an RV.
Baby Steps Lead to Big Wins
Taking things slowly—one baby step at a time—has given our family so much more freedom when it comes to traveling with Max.
Each little win opens up more possibilities and helps Max grow, too. He’s experiencing more of the world: new places, people, and moments with family. And we’re right there with him, learning as we go.
